Turn your cooking skills into a career

Gone are the days when women were the ones responsible for preparing the food.

Chef Madumo Monageng (32) has always had a flair for cooking, ever since he was a young boy.

Monageng matriculated from Petit High School and then proceeded to do a culinary arts apprenticeship programme with Tsogo Sun.

He then studied and obtained a Diploma in Food and Preparation at the HTA School of Culinary in Randburg.

Monageng says the culinary industry requires someone who enjoys cooking and is dedicated to the job.

“People who want to explore the industry must be willing to work long hours and have a creative mind,” he says.

Monageng has worked for Emperors Palace, OR Tambo Hotel, Sandton Sun Hotel and the Sandton Convention Centre.

He is currently conducting training for chefs at the South African Reserve Bank and is running a pop-up restaurant which serves gourmet food to the public.

Monageng advises young people who want to pursue a career in the culinary arts to take biology, science, business economics and maths as subjects.

He added that the food industry is broad and growing fast and young people can consider careers in related fields like food styling, food photography and menu development

His future plans are to open a culinary arts school in his community in order to develop and train young chefs.

Monageng says the perks of being a chef is that you are never hungry.
