Learning about the unknown

Book: The Unknown Van Gogh Author: Chris Schoeman Reviewed by: Gareth Drawbridge Review made possible by: Penguin Random House South Africa

The name Vincent van Gogh is known throughout the world.

Even individuals who have never heard of (or been fortunate enough to see) his works, at least know of his reputation as one of the greatest and most conflicted artists of all time.

There has also been much written about Vincent and the tempestuous relationship with his brother Theo.

However, what most people don’t know is that there was another van Gogh brother, Cornelis, who died in the Free State in 1900.

Cornelis, or Cor as he was known, was raised in the Netherlands before sailing to South Africa when he was 22.

In Africa he worked as an engineer on the gold mines and railways.

During the Anglo-Boer War, Cor joined the Boers and it was during this important part of South Africa’s history that he met his tragic end at the age age of 33.

Written by Chris Schoeman,The Unknown Van Gogh explores the life of Cornelis van Gogh.

Through letters and other important documents, Schoeman reconstructs Cor’s life, his marriage, his travels and his relationship with his genius brother.

The Unknown Van Gogh gives insight into the life of a man who has been eclipsed by his brother’s fame and to a certain extent forgotten by history.
