Springs Theatre hosts 1976 celebrations

Youth Month was celebrated on a high note at the Springs Theatre on Friday (June 19).

The theatre was packed to capacity and the stage came alive with singing and dancing from the Afro-Twist Ensemble.

A musical production was put together by the Ekurhuleni Metro and Afro-Twist, under the directorship of Zwelibanzi Sibiya and Mpupile Mathibe.

The hour-long musical play, Mbawula, tells the story of a teacher who is overwhelmed by historic flashbacks as he teaches his history class.

The play symbolically celebrates the role played by the youth of 1976 in bringing about democracy.

The flashbacks are centred around fire and the role it played in shaping South African’s historical landscape.

Zwelibanzi says fire is ambiguous, as it represents destruction, as well as rebirth and ushering new life.

“The youth being the fire that can become destructive if not channeled correctly, but if guided properly, can become the future of the country,” he adds.

The play was performed by a cast of 20 actors, singers and dancers.
