10 tips on how to avoid road rage

Aggressive driving is often demonstrated by drivers who take their anger, resentment and frustration with them behind the wheel.

These attitudes can lead to crashes and nasty confrontations.

Many instances of this aggressive behaviour involve drivers who cut you off, make unsafe lane changes, speed, follow too closely, run red lights and disobey traffic signs and signals.

To prevent road rage follow the tips:

  • forget work or home worries and concentrate on driving.
  • Plan your journey to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • Adopt a positive mental attitude to help with frustration.
  • Play music as this can reduce stress.
  • Don’t try to change other drivers’ attitudes.

No-one but a person can change their own attitude.

  • Be courteous and stay calm if provoked.
  • Drive with car doors locked and when trouble is noticed, don’t leave the safety of the vehicle.
  • Count from one to 10, it’s old but it works.
  • Don’t retaliate by sounding your hooter, flashing your lights or gesturing, this will only aggravate the situation.
  • If and when falling victim of aggression, take the registration number and report the incident to the police.

Remember it is better to get there late, than not to get there at all.
