Behind the voice

With Wheels and Wings only three weeks away, the Addie sat down with HunTer to find out what our readers can expect on the day, where she draws her inspiration and a little more about the local star.

HunTer will be the star attraction on the main entertainment stage and the MC for the day.

She will be joined on stage by “The Sounds of HunTer Band”.

Other performers on the day include JJ Stephens.

Addie: Tell our readers a little about yourself.

HunTer: I am a fun-loving outgoing person, very humble and down-to-earth.

A: What is your greatest dream professionally?

H: Becoming a household name all over SA and getting my CDs in stores across SA.

A: Name the top three things on your personal bucket list.

H: Travel overseas with my hubby and kids, own a little house in a beautiful getaway town near Langebaan, and go skiing in Switzerland.

A: Who are you at home?

H: I am the same person as on stage. What you see is what you get, I don’t change at home. Of course I am a mom and wife but on stage I am still a very happily married woman with two beautiful children, Kyle (12) and Nicole (5).

A: What is the one lesson you want your children to learn in life?

H: If they want something they must work for it, nothing in life comes easy or for free.

A: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

H: Adult Contemporary with a touch of Country, very deep meaningful words with soul-filling music.

A: How long have you been in the industry and what fuelled your interest?

H: I started at the age of 13. I’m 32 now so, wow 19 years. I’m still a baby in the industry. I started at a talent contest which I won and took it seriously from there. My mom always played music in the house so I grew up singing along with women like Cher, Jennifer Rush and Dolly Parton.

A: Before turning pro where did you hone your craft?

H: Rynfield Primary School choir and singing at festivals at the Catholic churches.

A: Do you come from a musical family and if so, who in your family is musical and what is their talent?

H: My mom’s side of the family are very musical playing all sorts of instruments. On my dad’s side my cousins sang as kids and never took it up professionally, they would have definitely made a mark in the industry.

A: Who are your musical influences?

H: South Africa’s best according to me: Nianell and overseas Cher and Lady Antibellum.

A: Do you compose your own music and if so where does this inspiration come from?

H: Yes I do compose or produce my own music, it comes along with what I am going through or feeling at the time.

A: What came first – the music or the lyrics?

H: Lyrics mostly but lately I play around on my guitar and find amazing chords and then write lyrics afterwards.

A: When writing songs where does your inspiration come from?

H: Life experiences mostly, I put my emotions and experiences into my music. Every song I have written and composed has a true life story behind it.

A: What can we expect from you at Wheels and Wings?

H: A vibrant show with my band and it will be very entertaining, you will want more.

A: What was the most valuable advice you were ever given?

H: “Believe in yourself and live your dream don’t ever give up.” This advice was given by Nianell, in person.

A: What advice would you give to young, aspiring artists who want to make it on the SA music scene?

H: Well, first of all ask yourself, “Is this what you really want to do for life?” Because it’s a long hard climb up the music industry ladder. If you have the passion for music and what it takes and are 110% willing to go through all the hard work and tears before the success, then put your heart and soul into your dream! Remember, unless you believe in yourself and your dream, no-one else will. My life motto is: I sing to live and I live to sing.
