A shocking let down

After bludgeoning audiences (and terrifying backpacking tourists) with his brilliant film Hostel, Eli Roth’s name is back in the credits.

Unfortunately, this time round, the film takes the audience on a pleasant walk through the park rather than dragging them kicking and screaming down a dark corridor towards a torture chamber.

Aftershock is a horror/thriller film which combines the threat of Mother Nature with the terrifying nature of man.

After an earthquake erupts in Chile, a group of tourists are forced to flee the devastation and find their own way to safety.

As the group tries to escape the chaos around them, they soon learn that the earthquake was only the start of their nightmare.

Nearby, a prison has collapsed and several psychotic criminals have escaped.

Of course, instead of making a run for it (which would have been the logical thing for any desperate criminal doing hard time), this bunch are out for blood.

Despite being almost 90 minutes long, the action in Aftershock only kicks in halfway into the film.

Aftershock is filled with a few twists and turns but none of them will have you double checking the locks before you go to sleep.

The film was produced by Roth and several others, but it is directed by Nicolas Lopez and unfortunately, it’s a shocking let down.

However, when it comes to macabre films, Roth is a genius and I’m sure it won’t be long before he has his audience screaming for more.
