Students to exhibit their photographs in Springs

The exhibition features specially selected contemporary images by students from the city’s photography project.

EKURHULENI is home to an abundance of talented artists with no proper platforms or opportunities to expand their artistic knowledge.

In celebration of Youth Month, the City of Ekurhuleni will host the Ekurhuleni Youth Photographic Exhibition, which will open at Springs Art Gallery on June 21.

The opening will start at 3pm and will be open until 10pm. Entertainment will be provided by Ekurhuleni Music School and there will be a pop-up craft and design market.

The exhibition features specially selected contemporary images by students from the city’s photography project.

Alongside other forms of artistic discipline, photography is a specialised field which requires specific equipment and technical knowledge. In 2012 the city’s department of sport, recreation, arts and culture introduced the photography project in Tembisa where students are taught the basics of photography.

Again in 2013, the beginner classes were rolled out to Duduza where a group of 15 individual amateur and aspiring photographers, aged between 13-35 years, learned how to see the world through the lens. There are now 30 students.

The exhibition will feature the students’ fresh, cutting edge works inspired by various spaces across Ekurhuleni.

The 59 photographs have been curated in collaboration with the Vaal University of Technology’s photographic department of visual arts and design. It varies in content and includes various themes relating to our modern day lives.

Members of the public are welcome to visit Springs Art Gallery where entrance to the exhibition is free of charge. The exhibition will run until August 30. The gallery is open weekdays from 9am to 4.30pm and on Saturdays from 8am to noon.
