Going Pink for breast cancer

Momentum, sponsors of the Momentum One-Day International between South Africa and India, will once again host a Pink Day, where spectators are encouraged to ‘Go Pink!’.

This initiative encourages supporters to wear pink to the cricket match to show their support for and raise awareness of breast cancer.

Fans wearing pink to the match on December 5 at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium will assist Momentum and Bidvest in setting a new record for the most people wearing a single colour, in one place in support of a specific cause.

PinkDrive, a South African breast cancer awareness and breast health services Public Benefit Organisation initiative, will also be a part of this event with the aim of raising R 1 million.

“Breast cancer is the number one cancer killer of women in South Africa, with 1 in 29 women with a lifetime risk of being diagnosed with this disease. We would like to appeal to all cricket fans to take a moment to think about this staggering statistic.

“All we ask is that, should this touch you in some way, you consider donating a small amount to PinkDrive. If one hundred thousand people donate R10 to the cause we will reach R1 million.

“Your small change can help make a huge difference. This can be done through our website for local and international spectators or via a simple SMS for local spectators,” says Noelene Kotschan, CEO Founder and CEO of PinkDrive.

This breast cancer awareness and breast health services initiative has been operational since 2009, touching the lives of over 84 000 individuals since inception.

With three educational vehicles, a Mobile Mammography Unit, a Mobile Educational Unit and a Mobile Women’s Health Unit that is in the process of being assembled in the Western Cape to be on the road by early 2014, PinkDrive is on the way to its final goal.

“It is our dream to have a Mobile Educational Unit and either a Mobile Women’s Health Unit or a Mobile Mammography Unit in every province.

“We would like to raise enough funds during the match to build another Mobile Educational Unit and you can be a part of us fulfilling this dream. We hope that this drive will also animate individuals the world over to spread the message that ‘Early Detection Saves Lives’,” says Kotschan.
