Springs runners come out in numbers for parkrun

It's running season.

The wonderful weather at President’s Park welcomed over 100 runners and walkers for the parkrun on Saturday.

Running season has officially begun for the professional runners in Springs.

Parkrun organiser Marius Jonker took to recording people’s run times after completing the 5km double-lapped trail and expressed his happiness at the number of attendees that were at the weekly event.

“The turnout is good and it’s starting to pick up. People want to get fit and lose their Christmas pot bellies,” he said.

Andrias Sello, who came first in the time trials, says he uses the parkrun as a means of preparation.

“I am preparing for the Comrades and other marathons.”

Not too far behind him were Gert du Plooy and Mmeselane Ramoshu, who came second and third respectfully.

Mmeselane is also preparing for the marathon season.

“I will be competing in the Comrades, the Two Oceans and the Kosmos 3-in-1 this year.”

Gert says he is running to keep fit and meet new people.

“I run for fun and being surrounded by people who constantly push me to be better.”

Women’s grandmaster Comrades runner, Karin Smith, was also present to join in on the fun.

Men’s master Comrades runner, Phumlani Masondo, says his focus is on the Two Oceans Marathon.

The Springs parkrun is held every Saturday at 08:00. Entrance is free.
