Hard-fought victory for Springs Rugby Club

The boys in blue and black were playing in the Makopano Covid Memorial Cup, which is an unofficial competition formed in late July.

The Springs Rugby Club proved they were a force to be reckoned with as all three teams won against Boksburg last Saturday.
The boys in blue and black were playing in the Makopano Covid Memorial Cup, which is an unofficial competition formed in late July after the Valke Union cancelled all official club rugby for the rest of the year.
“A couple of clubs in the union came together and decided to create an unofficial competition,” said club manager William de Jongh.
“We approached businesses like Makopano, KWV and R&A Building Supplies and from that, the Makopano Covid Memorial cup was born.
“The tournament is played in the spirit of sportsmanship and is dedicated to the legends they’ve lost during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Teams involved in the competition are Springs, Boksburg, Elspark and Witbank.
De Jongh said the club was lucky to have not lost any players to the virus.
“We lost a lot of committed players that decided to hang up their boots due to them losing their jobs,” said de Jongh.
Despite losing players, all three teams played exceptionally well on Saturday.
“They showed real guts and proved why Springs is one of the best clubs in the Valke Union. The passion and commitment that was showed at practice during the week by the players and coaching staff showed on the field on Saturday.
“I am extremely proud to be part of such a great club,” said de Jongh.
The match of the day was the first team who fought hard with a 29-26 win.
“It was a hard battle between the two teams with Boksburg bombarding Springs with one crunch tackle after another,” said de Jongh.

The home team will be playing away against Elspark and Witbank.
The team is looking forward to getting more support from Springsites and will announce their next home games on their Facebook page.
“The clubhouse is also open during the week where we have specials on our menu and the community can support us on and off the field.”
