Dance your way to fitness

“The class is a chance for people to get together, talk, relieve stress and dance in a safe, controlled environment,” said Lerato Moukangwe.

When the level five lockdown started in March last year, professional dancer Lerato Moukangwe found herself without a job and stuck at home.
Like many, she wanted to exercise and stay sane while being cooped up indoors.
That was when she realised she already had a way to get active and regain her fitness – dancing.
“Exercise can be fun, instead of it being a chore.
“With dance, you’re exercise but having fun at the same time.
“For me, it was really important, especially during this time of Covid-19, I did something that would help me relax, raise my serotonin levels, boost my immune system and help me keep my fitness levels up,” said Moukangwe.

This is what drove her to create L’evation Fitness, which offers dance classes as an alternative to traditional fitness classes.
“I was concerned about people’s well-being, especially children who haven’t been able to participate in any sport for over a year.
“The class is a chance for people to get together, talk, relieve stress and dance in a safe, controlled environment,” said Moukangwe.

Leading from the front; Blessing Mtetwa demonstrates the dance moves as Kayden Moukangwe, Shayda van Vuuren and Omolemo Raborife follow along.

Helping her with the lessons is Blessing Mtetwa (16), who conducts the hip-hop classes.
She is a Grade 10 learner at Springs Girls’ High School and is drawn to hip-hop because it is less technical than other forms of dance and allows you more room to express your personality.
Mtwetwa wants to dance professionally in the future and do graphic design.

Moukangwe and Mtetwa will be offering classes every Wednesday at 16:00 at the Pan African Shotokan Karate Federation Dojo in Selcourt.
They also offer one-on-one classes via Zoom.
“Anybody can come to our classes, we will be doing various dance styles.
“Your fitness level or dance ability doesn’t matter, we all start somewhere.
“Because of Covid-19 regulations, we’re limited to 18 people per class, so people must book their spot in advance,” said Moukangwe.
