Cha-cha your way to health Dance your way to fitness

Dance to the finish line

Covid-19 and the many restrictions it has placed on our daily lives has meant people have had to find alternative ways to stay fit and healthy.
Many are still too afraid to go to gym and contact sports like rugby and soccer have resumed for just the professional leagues.
Studio K in Selcourt has come up with a way to help young and old stay fit, socialise and get their groove on with their dance fitness classes.
The classes are for any dance experience level and are designed to help those who enjoy dancing keep fit while doing something they are passionate about.

“As a dancer for me to jog or go to gym, it’s extremely boring and we get bored quickly. When you’re dancing, you forget that you’re working out because its so enjoyable, ” said Studio K owner and instructor Keri Thompson.
For those that come to classes, it’s also an opportunity to socialise and get away from the everyday pressures of life.
“The ladies that come here say it’s like the stress of the day just falls away as they walk through the doors. It also invigorates you,” said Thompson.
Although the dance fitness classes have been going for 10 years, more and more people have come to appreciate and enjoy this alternative way of keeping fit.
Some of the advanced classes are more dance orientated while others focus more on strength and are not as high-impact or energetic, making them suitable for those with old injuries.

“In my class if someone has an injury, I would then give them an alternative move, so if we’re bending down very quickly and coming back up, I would tell them to touch their knees and come back up,” said Thompson.
The classes have proven to be very popular with women in their early 40s, with some of them in their 60s.
