Barbara Neuhoff makes the top five in Race the Legends Comrades

Neuhoff runs in Race the Legends Comrades and ends up on the top

Barbara Neuhoff has every reason to be proud of her fifth place finish in the Race the Legends Comrades last Sunday.

The 61-year-old Neuhoff ran in a time of 30 minutes, nine seconds in one of the coldest days of the year.

The Race the Comrades Legends is a concept based on the stories of the greatest Comrades legends in history.

The official Comrades Marathon website includes an online functionality where runners can virtually compete, run with and compare each other and the likes of Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe, Samuel Tshabalala and many others were able to create their own personal story and on completion was able to earn a real medal.

Neuhoff ran in the women’s 60-64 category and says she is absolutely thrilled with her time.

“I run my Parkrun every weekend and am very active.

“I set a good pace but when I saw my time, I was very happy.

“It’s quite an achievement for me as I had to overcome an injury setback a few months ago which slowed me down.

“Now that I’ve done this, I know I can improve on it and hopefully work my way up to running a 10km race,” says Neuhoff.

Although she ran her regular route to complete the 5km, Neuhoff says she pushed herself as it was a race.

She has set herself the target of improving her time next year.

“Once I started running, I didn’t even feel the cold,” says Neuhoff.

Running is something that came into Neuhoff’s life quite late as she only started running three years ago.

On the road, she’s found a family like no other.

“When I was running my race, I had people supporting all the way.

“They were hooting and clapping and cheering me on as I did my 5km.

“I understand now why my friends have been doing this for so long,” says Neuhoff.
