Striders frustrated with lockdown

Donker says: “We are struggling to get motivated and we are not happy with the three hours.

The annual Comrades Marathon has been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.

The Comrades Marathon Association chairperson Cheryl Winn has urged all runners and supporters to continue their efforts in raising and contributing funds for their chosen charity.

Winn says: “We are impressed and humbled by what our official charities are doing to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on their target communities.”

These charities are involved in sheltering the homeless, delivering food packages and many other endeavours.

Larissa Donker from Striders Athletics Club says that many of the runners are frustrated with cancellation as well as the lockdown, which only permits limited hours of exercise a day from 6am to 9am until further notice.

Donker says: “While we understand the importance of the lockdown, for us as athletes it is a setback as we are unable to train during this time. Coming back from this lockdown is like starting from zero.”

“Most people work during those hours so it’s impossible for the majority of people to use this time.’’

Some of the members have taken the initiative by hosting mini-marathons in their own backyards and participating in virtual marathons.

Those lucky enough to own a treadmill at home are using them to maintain a high level of fitness.

Donker says: “It’s not an ideal situation but we will come out of it with more determination to do our best.

Winn adds: “We understand that these are uncertain times but we do hope to bring a level of certainty regarding #Comrades2020 and all sub-events once the lockdown has been lifted.

“We appeal to all Comrades runners, past runners and supporters to please support the crucial work of our official charities.”

The Comrades website says a postponement date will be announced after the lockdown has been lifted.
