John Melupi – one step closer to Protea colors

Twenty districts from all over the country met from March 7 to 13 for the tournament.

John Molupi and the Ekurhuleni Bowls Inter-District Open team came out victorious in Port Elizabeth last week.

“We had some challenges because of the weather, but it was well managed, and I was not playing my normal position.

“I am usually lead, but I played second in the group.

“I know that as a good player, you must be able to play any position,” says Molupi.

“Our whole team won, we do not lose any games.

“It brought back good memories from George in 2018.

“It was the same team; I’m glad the selectors chose the same people again for this tournament.”

Molupi is one selection away from playing for the national team for bowling.

This comes after he was selected for the Gold Squad on February 15.

He will have to wait a little longer to compete for his spot on the national team to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Lana Visser (11) thinks more young people, especially girls, should try bowls as a competitive sport.

“When you love sport it is like you get sick when events are cancelled because you want to play,” he jokes.

“In the mean time, I will practise alone as much as I can.

“I have to stay fit and ready for any of the competitions.”

Molupi says he is especially grateful to Mike Smith, his coach.

“All his training helps.

“It all works for me.

“He is part of the reason I succeed.”

The Springs Town Bowling Club is encouraging the youth to join the sport.

Eleven-year-old Lana Visser achieved her provincial colors last week in the u-15 catergory.

“Bowls is not a game for old people.

“I wish more girls would play because now I’m the only female in my team.”

She says she enjoys the game because it’s a family sport.

Her whole family plays bowls.

She is looking forward to competing for her national colors later in the year.
