Springsites conquer the world’s biggest open-water swimming event

The Midmar Mile is the world’s biggest open-water swimming event.

The annual aQuellé Midmar Mile event at Midmar Dam in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, drew swimmers from all over the country on Sunday.

This year more than a handful of Springsites took part in the weekend event.

Kyle de Klerk (11) from Laerskool Selection Park managed to complete his first Midmar Mile.

He swam 1.6km in 45 minutes.

The Campbell family also participated, in remembrance of their uncle, Colin Campbell.

“Quite a few family members took part in the event too,” explains Melissa Campbell.

Craig Campbell finished the course in 47 minutes 22 seconds, Melissa was done in 40 minutes 33 seconds, and Clive Campbell finished in 43 minutes 38 seconds.

It was Marcus Campbell’s 24th Midmar Mile and he finished his race in one hour, one minute and seven seconds.

Another Springsite, Alexia Antoniades, completed the swim in 29 minutes 27 seconds.

“This was my third time completing the Midmar.

“The day started off very miserable, with lots of rain and thunder, but eventually we got to swim.

“It was a lovely weekend, an enjoyable swim and there was an awesome atmosphere.

“I will definitely will be back at it again in the years to come,” says Antoniades.

Greg Alan Palmer completed the swim in 42 minutes.

It was his first time swimming the Midmar Mile.

Both Palmer and Antoniades belong to Blackfin Swimming Club.
