Young athlete wins prestigious award

Fernando Booysen was invited by the MEC of Sport in Gauteng, Mbali Hlophe, to the Gauteng Sports Awards.

Fernando Booysen has been honoured with the Gauteng Sports Award for School Sport Athlete of 2019.

The 17-year-old was invited by the MEC of Sport in Gauteng, Mbali Hlophe, to the Gauteng Sports Awards.

Many would say that the award is a well-deserved reward for this young wrestler for his years of dedication, hard work and sacrifice.

“We are proud of him.

“And he keeps doing better and better,” says Dirk Booysen, the wrestler’s father.

Last year Fernando represented the nation in the Youth Olympics in Argentina.

For the Grade 11 Hoërskool Hugenote learner, the chance to participate in the games was a reward after his hard work.

The dedicated athlete attended a four-week training camp alongside teammate Matthew Bartlett, the Junior National Team from Hungary, USA, as well as Germany.

Booysen started wrestling at the age of eight and has over the past four years participated in competitions around the world.

The Gauteng Sports Awards took place at the Sandton Convention Centre, on Sunday.
