Springs Country Club host their first-ever Whities vs Darkies Competition

To make it interesting, it was decided to play the challenge in the form of a Ryder Cup over 27 holes.

The Springs Country Club had their first ever Whities vs Darkie Competition this past weekend.

Club captain Deon Kotze says: “Earlier this year, some of our black members contacted me and asked me to arrange a challenge between the black members and the white members.

“This was to have the players mix with each other and create an atmosphere which all would enjoy.

“The concept of Whities vs Darkies was born and all the members, both black and white, accepted the name of the challenge in good spirit,” says Kotze.

The first edition was held this past Saturday and the turnout was very good.

The two teams consisted of 50 players each.

To make it interesting, it was decided to play the challenge in the form of a Ryder Cup over 27 holes.

The first nine would be Betterball Match Play, the second nine Foursomse Match Play and the third nine Singles Match Play.

The Golf Committee sponsored a trophy which would be handed over to the winning captain at the end of the challenge.

Saturday’s challenge was a close affair and eventually, the Whities, led by Jose Carrazon, were triumphant by 54 points to the Darkies’ 46 points, who were led by Chris Ngwenya.

The day was enjoyed by all and the challenge will be included in the fixture list for 2020.

“The club’s AGM will be on September 19 at 7pm and all members are urged to attend.

“Players can also now sign up for the draw for the Betterball Knockout on the notice board, and players must ensure their games are played before the next round commences,” says Kotze.
