Springs boxers punch their way to the top

Coach Freddie Dicks says: "We are very proud about the way he fought. He showed that his fitness and technique really improved."

Gerhard Thysse (25), a teacher at Hoërskool Hugenote, and Geanne Dicks from Bert Collins Boxing Gym competed at the South African Boxing Elite and Youth Championship in Kimberley from July 2 to 6.

Thysse won the gold medal for the second time in a row in the 81kg elite category.

Chairperson Jeanette Dyzel says he fought against tough opponents, but they were impressed by his fitness and technique.

He won 5-0 in the quarter-final and also won by points in the semi-final and final round.

He is now preparing for the World Boxing Championships, which will take place later this year.

Geanne Dicks (17), a learner at Hoërskool Die Anker, won gold in the 69kg youth category.

She won on points against KwaZulu-Natal in the final round to take gold.

Thysse is part of the South African national team and his coach sees big things for him in the future.
