Striders Athletic Club hold annual awards ceremony

The highlight of the evening, however, was the legendary Comrades athlete, Bruce Fordyce, and his remarkable storytelling gifts.

Striders Athletic Club held their annual Aches and Pains events at the Fabu Leux Wedding and Function venue on Saturday evening.

The event follows this year’s Comrades and was to celebrate the athletes as well as celebration of the club itself.

Awards were given to athletes who stood out as were accolades showered on veterans who have been making the club proud for many years.

There was also some banter as ‘awards’ were given to members who failed to finish the marathon, those who finished last and those who predicted themselves finishing faster than they actually did.

Among the recipients were Zachariah Tshabalala who competed in his 10th Comrades Marathon. He was given his green number. Michael Tsholoba completed in his eight Comrades while Dinekh Buti competed in his third Comrades, winning a silver medal this year.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the legendary Comrades athlete, Bruce Fordyce, and his remarkable storytelling gifts.

Fordyce shared stories of his success at the Comrades and some of the highlights of his career, such as meeting the Queen of England as well as stories of many interesting runners he met during his career.
