Anglers fish it out for the Delmas Animal Shelter

“Many of us liked this idea of fishing for good. We had never done something like this,” says Gerber.

Anglers were up at the crack of dawn to compete in the fund-raiser at Aston Lake for the Delmas Animal Shelter on Sunday morning.

Fifty-six anglers were ‘fishing for good’ as they attempted to raise funds for the animal shelter.

The fund-raiser was the brainchild of Zandré Fensham and Melanie Fensham who noticed the need at the animal shelter.

“I fish quite a lot and one day I thought, why not do something as fishermen to raise funds for a good cause.

“I convinced Melanie and together we decided to help the shelter,” says Zandré.

Zandré says the response from the fishing community has been amazing.

“Within the first week of us announcing the fund-raiser, we sold out all our tickets.

“In the second week, we started receiving donations for the shelter.

“The week after, we received all the hampers that we received as prizes,” says Zandré.

Shane Gerber, one of the participants in the competition, says the great response from anglers just shows how big their hearts are.

Various fishing clubs from around the East Rand also sponsored the fund-raiser while KB Baits hosted the fund-raiser.

The animal shelter, which moved to their current premises nine months ago, houses cats, dogs, donkeys, geese, turtles and chickens and needs various materials to look after the animals in their care and those of the neighbouring community.

Jolande Verwey of the animal shelter was grateful to the anglers and organisers for what they had done.

“You are all angels.

“I can’t thank you enough for this,” says Verwey.
