Local schoolboy chosen to take part in Craven Week

Springs Boys High School learner Ntokozo Hlophe (17) was chosen to play for the u-18 Valke team as part of Craven Week.

According to his father, Vusi Hlophe, Ntokozo was the only player from Springs who was selected to take part in this prestigious tournament.

The player is no stranger to Craven Week as he was previously chosen to be part of the u-16 Valke team last year.

For Ntokozo, the opportunity to play at Craven Week is a chance to showcase his talent so he can pursue rugby as a profession.

The loose-head prop, who also plays soccer, only started playing the sport at the age of 10.

When asked what he enjoys the most about his position, Ntokozo says, “I enjoy scrumming.

“As a prop, you get a recognition from the miles you gain from dominating the scrum.”

As a player, Ntokozo has overcome the doubts he had about his level of talent and now firmly believes in himself.

Managing his time has become hugely important for the player who is in Grade 11.

“I train three to four times a week and I go to the gym with the team whether it be provincial or at school.

“It’s always hard but I do have people who help me with my school work.

“I also have a timetable that I follow when I get home and I always try to spend at least two hours studying daily and I often go to bed late.”

His father says he is proud of his son and what he has been able to achieve.

“As a parent, you first have to allow your children to be who they want to be and support and guide them all the way.

“Remember, it’s their dream and you have to help nourish it.”

The tournament is currently taking place at Paarl Boys High School from July 9 to July 14.
