An enduring passion

“The love for cycling runs in my blood.”

Springs Wheelers Cycling Club member Johan Strydom (41) is a veteran of eight editions of the ever popular National Classic cycle race hosted by Carnival City.

“Four of these races were on a tandem bicycle,” he says.

It was his tandem partner Johan van Rooyen’s first race on a tandem this year, and the two averaged a speed of 37.4km per hour for the duration of the race.

The duo finished the race in 2:45, which they felt was a good time.

Although he lives in Brakpan, Strydom is a long-standing member of the local cycling club, and received the club’s Cyclist of the Year award in 2012.

“It is a pity that mountain bikes are more popular than road bikes,” he says, adding: “There are only a few road bike members left in the club.”

Strydom started cycling when he was 14 years old.

He says he also loved boxing, competing in the ring until he was in Grade Eight and receiving his Springbok colours for the sport.

After school he also played action cricket, but it was his love for cycling that endured.

“It kind of grows on you,” he says.

He remembers his first 94.7km race, which he finished in 3:09.

“It was a wonderful experience,” says Strydom.

It was a proud moment when he received his yellow Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge number on November 19.

The number is given to riders who have competed in the race for 10 years, and he plans on getting the red number after his 15th race.

His first tandem partner was the late Allister Scott from Springs.

He explains a tandem allows two cyclists of differing strength and ability to ride together pleasurably.

“The faster rider doesn’t need to wait for the slower one, the slower rider doesn’t need to struggle to try to keep up with the faster rider.”

Strydom’s wife Yolandi and his three children, Lukas (13), Anja (8) and Jana (5), are his greatest supporters.

The greatest moment of his life was when his son was his tandem partner in the 94.7 race.

“I was so proud of him for staying focused for 94.7km that I had to swallow the tears.”

One thing he strongly believes in is that other road users should be made more aware of cyclists.

His advice to beginners is to strive for fitness, motivation and driving power, all of which play an important role.

“Work towards your goal,” says Strydom.
