Fun on the dance floor

Backstage dancers make clean sweep at dance competition.

Backstage Dance Studio dancers recently competed at the Solo Dance Latina competition held at Presidents Dam.

The competition included three main categories: Classica consisting of contemporary, jazz, ballet and Spanish; Latin consisting of cha-cha, samba, paso, jive, salsa and rumba; and energy which included Bhangra, slow style and hip-hop.

According to dance teacher Alicia Flemming the dancers had fun on the dance floor.

“The dancers, aged between three and 15 years, danced in various categories with a brand new section, open hip-hop, added to the competition,” she says.

The students received the following accolades:

Mikayla du Plessis (7) took first place in the three to seven years one dance energy, followed by Leané Grobler (7) in second place followed by Klarissa Roux (5) in third place.

In the one dance energy eight to 10 years Cassia van der Linde (8) took first place, followed by Toy Horn (8) and Megan Scholtz (9) in third place.

Priscilla Sithole (15) took first place in the 10 to 15 one dance energy section.

Four dancers competed in the three to six years energy section and six-year-old Gabriela du Preez was placed second in this category.

Another second place was taken by Durand Smith (8) in the seven to nine year old energy as well as in the four to eight years open hip hop category.

The 10 to 15 years energy section saw Breedt de Lange taking first place and Daniella Smith (12) third place.

In the open hip-hop category nine to 11 years Amber Mengel (9) took third place, while Breedt de Lange (12) took second place in the 12 to 15 years category.

“I am extremely proud of each and every dancer who competed, regardless of the placements.

“They did their best given the short time they have been dancing” says Flemming.
