Four young boxers eager to face championships

Local boxers ready for action.

While boxer Geanne Dicks‘ friends will relax during their school holiday, she will practise with other junior boxers in Pretoria.

These training sessions are in preparation of the upcoming South Africa Junior Boxing championships to be held in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on October 27.

Bert Collins Boxing Club manager, Jeanette Dyzel, says Gauteng junior and youth teams attend these practise sessions.

“Geanne, a Grade Nine learner from Hoërskool Die Anker, has won several tournaments this year and is well prepared for the upcoming championships,” says Dyzel.

This 15-year-old boxer has won the Inter-Provincial Boxing Tournament in KZN in April against a boxer from KZN.

Geanne won her fight with points in the 60kg category.

In June she also won the Western Cape vs Gauteng Inter-Provincial Tournament.

Dyzel says this was an awesome win for Geanne as her opponent’s coach called the fight within 30 seconds of the first round.

“This happened when the opponent has no chance of defending herself,” says Dyzel.

Geanne also recently overshadowed her opponent from Mpumalanga in a smaller development tournament.

She is not the only boxer from Bert Collins who is getting ready for upcoming events.

Junior boxers Clayton Meyer, Adriaan Cologne and Minette Dicks are part of the Ekurhuleni schools boys and girls team who will compete in the Gauteng Schools Boys and Girls championships which will take place in Sedibeng in Vereeniging at the end of October.

Clayton will fight in the 34kg, Adriaan in the 48kg and Minette in the 50kg weight categories.

Dyzel says if the trio wins the fights at this competition, they will go through to the next level at the South Africa Amateur Boxing Organisation School (Sanabo), better known as the Sanabo School tournament in December.

“We are proud of our boxers who have proved their boxing skills are of a high standard,” says Dyzel.
