Springs Town boasts new EKB champion

Springs Town Bowling Club has a new Champ of Champions.

John Molupi recently won the Ekurhuleni Bowls (EKB) Champion of Champions played at Modderfontein Bowling Club.

In the finals, this Springs Town Bowling Club member had to play against Matthews Phiri from Edenvale.

Molupi beat Phiri 21-6.

“The first game was one of the toughest games during the knockout due to the speed of the green,” he says.

Molupi managed to beat his Modderbee Bowling Club opponent 21-17.

“From the second game the greens were easier and I found that I played well throughout the competition,” he says.

He played against bowlers from Delmas and Avion Park and in the semi-finals he faced Brian Harrison from Springs Old Boys.

John beat Phiri 21-5.

Being the champion is something Molupi is proud of as his aim is to be included in the national squad.

According to him, he gains more confidence as the game progresses.

“It is best to concentrate on your own game strategy as each game is different,” he says.

Molupi is grateful for all the assistance by his fellow club members.

“They are wonderful people who are always ready to support me where needed,” he says.

Rudolph Pretorius recently bought him a new set of bowls.

“This is the kindness these people are showing,” says Molupi.

Mike Smith from Springs Town Bowling Club explains the EKB Champion of Champions is a competition set up by Ekurhuleni Bowls for all club champions, open singles, senior singles and novice club champions, woman and men.

“There are 24 clubs in the EKB district, who compete at this level,” he says.

Although Molupi was the Ekurhuleni Bowls Open Masters champion in 2016, he missed the recent finals by a lower shot average in his section.

The Open Masters is an invitation competition also administered by the EKB.

The district invites the top bowlers of the district to compete in this prestigious competition.
