Slovo United comes out at top

Sunday saw soccer players from across Springs play at the sports grounds in Slovo Park.

The Top Four Tournament was held at the grounds where four different teams played against each other for the top spot.

Slovo United, which is an open team with current players aged from 13 to about 40, played the first game against Western Bats.

Team manager, Sefako Masoeu, says they started the team in August after they approached the Ekurhuleni Metro to ask for a soccer field.

“Now we have our own soccer field where we can play our games,” he says.

Slovo United played in the semi-finals against the Western Bats FC, winning 2-1.

In the finals, they faced the New House Team FC and drew 1-1 at the end of the game.

Slovo United played penalties after the draw and won 4-2.

The team, which consists only of Slovo Park players, practices hard throughout the week to play tournaments on Sunday.

“We usually start early in the morning and I am very proud of my team for their diligence.”

Sefako and the team’s coach Phillip Madlala, say they want to register the team to make them official.

“We have to keep the boys busy and help them as our young people are smoking nyaope,” says coach.

“This stuff is killing our youngsters and we feel an obligation to keep them busy with soccer so they don’t ruin their lives,” adds Sefako.

Sefako and Phillip say they need donations or sponsorship in order for them to register their team so they can play in the big Springs leagues.
