Local bowling clubs proud hosts for Gauteng Open

Local clubs play host to bowling championships.

Springs Old Boys (SOB) Bowling Club was one of the clubs where top bowlers competed in the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open 2017 last weekend.

This year the championships are hosted by Ekurhuleni Bowls.

Bowlers competing in the men’s pairs played 15 ends on Saturday and Sunday.

The women’s singles competition bowlers played 21 shots on Saturday and Sunday.

Bowlers as far as White River competed at SOB.

There are 24 bowling clubs hosting the event which is played over three weekends.

Mike Clarke from SOB agrees with Ian Stayt, president of Gauteng Bowls, who says “the success of any tournament is determined by good organisation and the attitude of the players”.

“The championships is currently the largest single tournament in South Africa and is almost as big as the Nationals,” says Clarke.

SOB women prepared scrumptious meals for all the players over the weekend.

In the men’s pairs players Bryanston Sports, Alberton, Pretoria Municipals, Witpoortjie, Krugersdorp and Linden competed in Section 39, while players from Pretoria High School (PHSOB), Morningside, Rustenburg Impala, SBS Old Boys (CBCOB) and White River played for a place in Section 40.

In the women’s pairs, bowlers from Belgravia, Lynnwood, CBCOBs, Brackenhurst and Wonderboom played in Section 21, while Section 22 saw players from Benoni Country Club, Ruimsig, Ferndale, Edenvale, Groenkloof and Morningside.

The men’s singles saw players from Morningside, Leases, Randburg and Springs Old Boys playing in Section 55, while players from Delville, PHSOB, Pretoria Military and Bryanston Sports bowlers competed in Section 56.

Section 57 saw players from Avion Park, Heidelberg, Wanderes and CBCOB competing in the championships.

Mike says players from PHSOB, Ruimsig, Alberton and Edenvale played in the women’s singles Section 32.

The men’s fours saw players from Bryanston Sports, Edenvale, PHSOB, Randburg, Reading and Bedfordview.

The semi-finals will be played on July 22.

On July 23, the finals will be played followed by the prize-giving.
