Booth finishes second in 30km race

Victoria Lake Canoe Club hosted one of the first early river races for the new season last Saturday (June 3) covering a distance of 30km.

Tommy Booth and Johan Nel from Springs both participated in this race from Daleside, on the Klip River, to Meyerton.

Booth was the second finisher of the 30km race.

The race consisted of two groups, one group was the novice category where the winners would have a beginner first-year paddler in the boat in order to win a specially baked cake.

This was to encourage beginners to take on the race challenges and to encourage experienced paddlers to give them a leg up and partner with them while they learn the skills needed.

Nel partnered up with Stewart Green to take on the novice challenge, but were unable to finish the race when their boat was damaged further down the river.

The river race was also identified as the Gauteng K1 River Championships, to identify the paddlers who would be selected to represent the province at the SA K1 River Championships which takes place tomorrow (June 16) in the Western Cape, as the second category in the race.

Booth, now an experienced river paddler with a number of major A-grade races and Dusis successfully completed, finished as the second Gauteng Canoe Union River Champion, in a time of two hours and six minutes.
