Springs’ nail-biting win

Springs Rugby Club's first team beat their Vereeniging Rugby Club opponents, on home ground, 26-25 on Saturday.

Springs’ first team had a tough start against their opponents and left the field with a half-time score of 7-6.

Coach Ocker Brits says it was a nail-biting game but the players pulled through and proved to their opponents why they are a winning team.

Vereeniging opened the score board after a penalty within the first 20 minutes of the game.

Left lock Francois Prinsloo changed the score board after his first try, followed by Kazlo Holtzhausen’s conversion.

Immediately after Holtzhausen’s conversion, another penalty was awarded to Vereeniging, which changed the half-time score to 7-6.

Vereeniging struck back with two tries at the start of the second half, followed by left flanker Eben Buitendach’s first try.

The score board changed to 18-13 after Holtzhausen’s second conversion.

Brits says Vereeniging didn’t give up and soon the score changed to 25-13.

However, Springs was determined to fight back and Robin Howell followed with a try.

“Just before the end of the game Springs made a vicious attack and Andre Grobbelaar dived over the goal line for the winning try,” says Brits.

It was the last game of the first round which left Springs on top of the log.

The u-21 team won their game 24-13.

“This team worked hard and are improving on a weekly basis,” says Brits.

In another tough match the second team lost their game 29-17.

The teams will take on East Rand United at the start of the second round of the league.
