Good win for Springs Rugby Club’s first team

Three local rugby teams played against Northwest University (NWU) teams in cold and wet conditions at Vanderbijlpark on Saturday.

Springs Rugby Club’s first team beat their opponents to a 33-25 victory.

Their coach Ockert Brits says the team kicked off at 9pm, in icy cold weather.

He says Springs just couldn’t get started against a highly-motivated NWU team, leaving the half time score 20-0 in NWU’s favour.

After the players received a hard, yet motivational talk from their coach the game plan changed.

“Early in the second half left flanker Eben Buitendach crossed the line for the first try of the second half,” says Ockert.

Right centre Kazlo Holtzhausen did not disappoint his team when he added two more points to Buitendach’s five, changing to scoreboard to 7-20.

Four benched impact players were added to the team.

“This made a huge difference to the game.

“Loosehead prop Klaas van Wyk and scrumhalf Wynand Venter need to be named,” says Ockert.

He says NWU couldn’t keep up with the pace of the Springs players.

Springs showed good character in the second half and added four more tries to a final score of 33-25.

Holtzhauzen succeeded with four out of five conversions.

Buitendach, Venter, eighthman Dowayne Botha, van Wyk and fly half Gerhard Jordaan each added to the 33 points with a try.

“Although the teams played in very difficult weather conditions they showed good sportmanship,” says Ockert.

The u-21 team made a good effort but lost their game 22-5.

Another tough game was played by the second team who also lost their game 22-19.

The three teams will take on Brakpan at Brakpan Stadium at 5pm on Saturday.
