Mariette Rossouw, one of the organisers of the Springs parkrun, says the weekly parkrun is very successful with an average of 400 runners and walkers a week.

The 5km walk/run around President’s Park is open to all members of the community and is held every Saturday at 8am sharp.

Those who are interested can merely register on their website and receive a personal barcode which records the number of parkruns attended by the member and the time in which they finished.

The average run time of the 5km race is 45 minutes and 40 seconds.

Springs’ parkrun attracts hundreds.

The female record holder of the Springs parkrun is Corlize with a time of 20:31.

The Springs parkrun male record holder is Michael Pienaar with a time of 15:39.

Mariette says they have an average of 10 Veritas College students who volunteer weekly as part of the school’s community service project.

The students spend two hours per Saturday at the parkrun to make up the hours needed to complete the project.

“The Springs parkrun challenges other schools and its students to volunteer their time and give back to the community like the Veritas College students are doing,” says Mariette.

She adds that they are prepared to sign off on community service.
