Ten-year-old swims first Midmar Mile

The Midmar Mile took place at the Midmar Dam near Howick and Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

Siyanda Khoza (10) a Grade Five learner from Veritas Preparatory School, swam his first Midmar Mile.

His mother, Joana, says she was extremely proud of her son when he finished the 1.6km race in one hour, two minutes and 55 seconds.

“He has always loved swimming and I will always support him if he wants to compete in future swimming races,” she says.

Siyanda says: “I felt I could do it and I said to my mom, ‘Okay mom, let’s do it.’

“It was an amazing feeling to take part in a competition so big.”

He adds that he has always loved swimming and started from a young age.

“I started swimming when I was about four or five and I’m going to take part in the next Midmar Mile. I want to have a faster time.”

Siyanda is part of his school’s swimming team and says they are going to Welkom today (Thursday) to take part in the league competition.

Not only is the 10-year-old Midmar Mile competitor a passionate swimmer, but he also has a love for soccer.

“We haven’t started playing soccer this year, but when the season starts, I plan on being on the team.”

He adds that although he loves soccer, swimming is an important part of his life.

“I want to be a lifeguard one day. I want to save people’s lives.”

Siyanda says his mom is extremely supportive of what he does and wants to do.
