Boxers pack in the punches

The Bert Collins Boxing Club hosted the Ekurhuleni Elite, Youth and Junior Championships on Saturday.

Kobus Nienaber was the first boxer of the Bert Collins Boxing Club to enter the ring, fighting a convincing match and winning with a 5-0 decision.

The enormous win resulted in Kobus being named the Ekurhuleni Elite Champion in the 60kg weight division.

Another Bert Collins boxer, Charl Coetzer, was named Ekurhuleni Elite Champion in the 64kg weight division.

Fighting hard against a junior boxer, Adriaan Colyn managed to land enough punches on his opponent to even out the score. The match ended in a tie.

Unfortunately, because it was an amateur match, a decision had to be made, and Adriaan lost with a 3-2 ruling.

The club had another great fighter in Rodney Botha, who fought like a true champion, used the ring to its full potential and chose his punches well.

Fighting with detailed precision, he won with a ruling of 5-0.

Jeanette Deysel, coach and referee, says Clayton Meyer fought with the heart of a lion.

“Personally, I feel that Clayton won the fight as he dealt cleaner shots and defended himself incredibly well against a much taller opponent whose punches landed mostly against Clayton’s gloves,” she says.

Jeanette explains that another one of the club’s boxers, Pieter Lubbe, started off well, but soon his fitness and over-eagerness got the better of him and cost him the fight, as was the case with Tim Lubbe.

Coaches Freek Dicks and Jeanette say they are extremely proud of all their boxers who fought on Saturday.

Kobus and Charl have both been chosen to represent Ekurhuleni at the Gauteng Elite Championships in April.

Geanne Dicks was chosen for the Ekurhuleni Junior and Youth Academy team as well as Freek Dicks as coach.
