Another Springs tennis star on the rise

The Selection Park Tennis Club has a number of talented players.

One such star is Kyla Yelverton (23), who has had a love for the sport since she was eight years old.

Kyla has taken part in the club singles since 2012 and was named the winner of the singles last year, as well as this year.

The singles champion gives a lot of credit to her coach, Jack Fenwick, who she grew up with.

“He took my tennis to the next level and got me to a good place,” she says.

Kyla says she looks up to the famous tennis player, Serena Williams.

“As a woman, she brings out the next level of competitiveness.”

Her advice for those who want to take up tennis as a hobby or sport is that tennis is a fun, social and competitive sport.

“It teaches discipline and helps you to stay active.

“It feels weird when I’m not playing tennis, but I also have other hobbies such as reading, cycling, jogging and hanging out with my friends.”

Kyla also plays for the University of Pretoria’s tennis team and is currently studying information science.

She attended Selpark Primary and matriculated from Dr Johan Jurgens High in 2011.
