Springs hosts parkrun

The parkrun event was held at the grounds of Horse and Hound on Paul Kruger Highway on Saturday.

The chilly early morning temperatures seemed to encourage the runners and walkers.

Some of the runners came with their dogs for the 5km run which starts exactly at 8am, an important point for all parkrun events.

Johan van Vuuren brought his two eager dogs, Duke (left) and Chrisjan to take part in the parkrun on Saturday.

Springs Striders Mariette Rossouw and Leani van Wyk were the event directors.

Runners kicked off at exactly 8am on Saturday morning for the start of the 5km Parkrun race.

Bruce Fordyce, who gave an encouraging speech before the race kicked off, also took part in the parkrun.

Matsobane (42) and Sherly (36) Thupi from Payneville say this was their fifth parkrun event, adding that they love the parkrun events and will continue doing them as long as they can.

Mariette explains that an average parkrun time is about 20 to 26 minutes for the fast runners, 27 to 35 minutes for the average runners and 40 minutes to an hour for the walkers.

First runner home Michael Pienaar (21) from Boksburg completed the 5km course in 15 minutes and 36 seconds, much to the delight of the event directors who met him close to the finish line and ran with him until the end.

Corlize Stoltz (12) was the first woman runner to make the finish line.
