Promoting karate in the community

Karate Progressive Dojo in Tsakane is calling upon all interested in the sport, young and old, to come and train.

The Progressive Dojo holds its training sessions at the Faranani MultiPurpose Centre in Tsakane every Monday till Friday from 6am till 8am with the aim of getting more people into the sport.

Sensei Simon Ntlwana, who has been practising karate for over 20 years, says he wants more people to come and experience the perks that come with karate training.

“Karate is not only about fighting like most people assume, there is a lot of technicality which requires one to think.

“I believe that it also helps the young ones to be more disciplined as they grow up because, without discipline and commitment, one cannot excel in karate,” he says.

He further encourages women to come as it will also equip them to be able to protect themselves when under attack or in a dangerous situation.

Currently Ntlwana has 15 students he is training and he says he’d like for the class to try and revive karate in the community.

“When I first started in 1995, the sport was very celebrated and I see now that it is fading which is not good bearing in mind that our youth are now getting involved in crime and substance abuse.

“Karate trains the body and mind which is what we need to instill in our youth nowadays who are faced with so many temptations,” he adds.

Going forward the sensei says he will be holding classes in the afternoons so those who can’t make it in the mornings will have the opportunity to join.
