Boxing sisters shine in Durban

Springs sisters, Minnet (13) and Geanne Dicks (14), both recently crushed their opponents at the Inter-Provincial Development Tournament held in Durban.

These two boxers train at Bert Collins Boxing Club in Geduld.

Minnet defeated Thandeka Lukhelo of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on points (3-0) by judges’ decision in the 47kg division.

She was announced as best female boxer although it was her first development tournament.

In the 57kg division, Geanne also won on 3-0 points by judges’ decision against Andile Mbatha of KwaZulu-Natal.

Both girls have been boxing for three years and are coached by their father Freddie Dicks (40).

“I’m very impressed with both boxers.

“However, they can still improve their skills in certain areas,” says Freddie.

The aim of the tournament was to develop boxers from the academies for the South African Championships at the University of the Witwatersrand in November.

Geanne is the current South African champion in the 54kg division and will be defending her title at the championships.

She is in Grade Eight at Hoërskool Die Anker and has only lost two fights in her career.

Minnet is currently head girl at Laerskool PAM Brink.

The tournament took place between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal boxers.

Geanne Dicks (14) will be defending her SA Champion title in the 54kg division at the upcoming SA Championships.
