Futsal festival in Springs

In attempts to promote, and get the community involved in, futsal soccer, the SAFA Ekurhuleni Futsal League hosted a one day tournament on Saturday.

The tournament took place at the Springs Indoor Arena, where 24 futsal teams from around Ekurhuleni battled it out on the pitch.

Deputy Chairperson of SAFA Ekurhuleni Futsal League, Thabiso Marumo says the festival was their first futsal tournament with so many Ekurhuleni-based teams in one arena.

“Since we are trying to form our own league in Ekurhuleni, having a tournament was the first step in getting teams and supporters involved.

“Futsal soccer has been around for so many years, but it has not received much-needed attention because no formal leagues were formed in our community.

“As an association we have taken it upon ourselves to make it more visible and known in Ekurhuleni by forming leagues in different areas so we can also have teams representing the metro in the Gauteng league.

“So far the response has been overwhelming and we will be hosting more tournaments in the future,” he adds.

The first game of the tournament saw KwaThema Underdogs lose 4-3 to Ekurhuleni United who are part of the Gauteng Futsal League.
