New karate school keeps children busy

Michael Cindi (62) has embarked on establishing a new karate school in Wright Park.

Pan African Shotokan Karate Dojo has been in operation since the end of May and training commenced from the first week of June.

“We are a Shotokan-style karate school but also focus on Koshiki-style, self-defence and fitness classes,” says Michael.

“This is one of many other branches that I have and I am glad to be bringing it to Wright Park.”

Michael says he embarked on this initiative as a way to bring recreational activities to the area, while teaching the principles of discipline and safety that come with martial arts.

“I want to be able to do something that will keep the youth out of harm’s way and teach the community about self-defence techniques,” he adds.

Michael says the reception from the Wright Park community has been positive and sparked a lot of interest from the community.

“This tells us we are doing something right and the community acknowledged that,” he adds.

Michael says his long-term plans are for his students to win national championships, much like his KwaThema students have previously.

“It will require a lot of training and hard work,” he says.

“I am sure with the right support from the community and commitment from students we will get there.”

Michael says his passion for karate stems from many years ago.

He adds that it is a discipline that has enabled him to travel the world and make great strides withing the discipline.

“I have travelled to Germany, America and other parts of the world,” he adds.

“I have been a Transvaal champ four times and trained in Los Angeles for five years with James Field.”

These are a few of Michael’s many achievements.

He is also a former junior Springbok, with one to four dans equating to nine in total.

The school runs from Monday to Saturday from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, and is open from ages six to 75.

“I also want to dispel the misconceptions people have about karate,” says Michael.

“Karate does not just teach people how to fight but how to have discipline and a health body and mind.”
