Golf club hosts its annual festival

The Pollak Park Golf Club hosted its Festival of Golf, which started on Tuesday and ran until Sunday.

“All golf clubs have a festival of golf,” says Rachel Howard of the club’s Pro Shop.

“It is usually held in the club’s birthday week and aimed at celebrating the birthday while raising funds for the club.”

The club turned 95 in March.

“We usually have our festival in March,” says Rachel, “but with the many event bookings we have had, we had to postpone it to June.”

Although the long weekend and unpredictable weather put a spanner in the works, Rachel says the festival was still a success.

She says they were still able to raise a lot of money for the club.

Much of the funds raised are said to go towards development of the club and the development players of the club.

“We spend a lot of time nurturing young and developing players who wish to pursue the sport professionally,” she says.

“We are even fortunate enough to have some of our members donating their old golf clubs to these development players.”

The club teaches children from the age of four years as part of their development programme.

“It’s really great to have the support of our members who are just as passionate about developing players and the sport as a whole,” says Rachel.

“It’s all about the older, more experienced players giving back.”

Each day of the tournament had a specific theme and activities available thereafter.

The themes ranged from the Seniors’ and Ladies’ league to the Chicken Run on Wednesday.

Thursday was a networking opportunity for local businesses.

Friday’s committee day saw members and committees from different clubs come together to play friendly games of golf.

Saturday saw the potjie kos competition warm up the players after a long morning of play.

The festival culminated in the individual stableford games on Sunday.

“Thanks to all members and visitors who played in our 95th Birthday Festival of Golf,” says Rachel. “We look forward to many more successful years at the club.”
