Athletes enjoy Aches and Pain prize-giving

The annual Springs Striders Aches and Pains prize-giving event was held in the hall of St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brakpan on Saturday.

The event is usually the highlight of every athlete’s year as they receive the King and Queen of the Day awards as well as other trophies and prizes.

Club chairman Jackie Sheddon said it was an honour to have a grandmaster veteran runner in their midst and asked Joy Murphy to hand over the award of the evening to Petra Myburgh.

Petra completed her 20th Comrades Marathon and received an honourary trophy as well the trophy for finishing her 20th Comrades.

It was 20 years ago when Petra read an article on the “100 miler” and did her first Comrades as practice. She has been running since.

“Although it is hard work and takes a lot of determination, I have to give glory to God, as I would not be able to do this on my own,” she said.

Winny Mbukwana was the first Strider home and received the well-deserved veteran women’s trophy, with Thabo Thwala who received his men’s veteran trophy.

Last year Karin Smith finished last and received the “late-comer” trophy, but was proud to hand it over to Gerrie du Toit, who finished last this year.
