Call for young anglers

The Daggafontein Boat Anglers club members are avid anglers who are keen to welcome young anglers to their club.

Founder member Allan Buekes, says they are deep-sea anglers who love nature.

The club’s co-founder members are Johan Coetzee and John Kuyper. The club was established 42 years ago in 1974.

Allan says their first clubhouse burnt down about 15 years ago, therefore, they had to open another clubhouse in Pienaar Street, Selection Park Industrial.

The senior members are keen to welcome younger members to the club.

Although having a boat is a big investment, they encourage youngsters to join whether they have a boat or not.

“They can join as a social member,” says Allan. “Light-tackle boat anglers can also join the club.”

He claims they enter club and other annual competitions and have produced quite a few Springbok anglers, including Cliff Reid, Johan Coetzee, Tubby Brown and Greg Alloway.

When the boat goes out to the open sea, they have four to five crew members on board.

The three main competitions they enter are the Oos Eastern Transvaal, the Bill Fish 15 000 and the Myn Manne Competition, which usually takes place at Sodwana Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.

With a strong membership of 48, they have 21 registered boats.

“This is a sport that involves the whole family,” says Allan.

The club members meet at 6pm, every third Wednesday of the month at the clubhouse at 6pm. The meeting is followed by a braai.

Anyone interested in joining the club can call Jamey O’Donoghue on 074 898 3243.
