U12s go for gold

On Sunday, the Springs Old Boys u12s played a home game against the Benoni Spurs.

This was the first cup game for the season and it was a riveting display of talent, skill and perseverance from both sides.

The first half of the match, which kicked off at 9am, proved to be a very challenging and highly-pressured game for both teams.

The boys played a solid 30 minutes, without either of the teams scoring a goal.

“This is a very tight game,” says Titi Nkosi who is the team manager, “Normally we would have scored by now, so that just goes to show how strong the other team is.”

The second half of the match picked up when both sides showed revised strategies and increased confidence as the line up took to the field.

Lungile Vilakazi scored the first goal of the match for Springs Old Boys and, shortly thereafter, the pace of the game picked up.

It was hardly ten minutes thereafter when Katlego ‘Socks’ Mokolla scored, what would be, the second and winning goal of the match.

The audience cheered and celebrated from the sidelines while the boys performed their victory ‘dab’ (which is their signature celebratory dance).

“The boys train really hard,” says Titi, “And they have a phenomenal coach, who dedicates himself twice a week to ensure that we get to witness such exceptional soccer every weekend.”

Ronnie Slava, who is the team’s coach, expressed his pride but says he feels there is still a long way to go.

“Our opposition teams are proving to be exceptionally strong, so we are in for a tough challenge,” says Ronnie, ”But we are definitely aiming for that gold!”
