Bull-terriers at Old Boys

On May 7, the Springs Old Boys Bowling Club hosted an Adora-Bulls bowls day, which was aimed at raising funds for and awareness of the Adora-Bull Terrier Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre.

The morning involved friendly bowling for participants who entered at a cost from which the collective funds from the costs will go towards the Adora-Bull centre.

There was also a variety of products on sale, the proceeds of which will go towards the collective effort of dog rescue and rehabilitation.

Earlier in the morning, some of the dogs who are in the care of the organisation were brought to meet the participants and supporters of the event.

“We did this as a way to raise funds for our charity,” said Bernadette Gentz, who is a volunteer at Adora-Bulls.

“We will take the proceeds from the entry fees for the bowling and the sale of the products we have on display and use them towards improving our centre and saving the lives of many more dogs.”

Bernadette further explained that the non-profit organisation, which was founded by Danie Skone, takes in abandoned, neglected or abused bull terriers from their harmful environments, while educating people about the misconceptions they may have about the breed.

“Most people are misinformed about the bull terrier breed, so most times the dogs are abused, or sometimes even put to death because of this,” explains Gentz.

”We would like to change that negative perception that people have.”

Louise Clark, who was the co-coordinator and organiser of the event, expressed the appreciation and fulfilment she has gained from being a volunteer at the centre.

“It is such a wonderful organisation,” she said, with great pride.

“It is rewarding to be in the position to save lives through the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption processes we have as an organisation.”

The event proved to be a success that enjoyed the support of many Springs community members, and the participation of club and non-club members in the fund-raising bowls tournament.

The organisation also garnered great support in sales of their products.

“I am so happy about this turn-out,” said Clark.

“We have received great support and we would like to thank Springs Old Boys’ Bowling Club for offering us the venue to use for free; we hope to make this an annual event in future.”
