Memorial tennis tournament ends on high note

The annual Gary Dickson Memorial Doubles Tournament finals were played at the Selection Park Tennis Club at 1pm, on Saturday.

This tournament is played in remembrance of club member Gary Dickson, who died on court a few years ago.

The afternoon kicked off with the Men’s Doubles final, which was over in a matter of 40 minutes when Ernst de Wet and Sias Reynecke defeated Mick Hurst and Rodney Smith 6-0 and 6-3.

The Women’s Doubles, however, was a different story altogether.

Sandy Kock and Isabel Thurston took on Michelle Kent and Linda Knoetze.

The evenly matched four stretched the exciting match out into a marathon two and a half hours.

Neither team would give an inch, but Michelle and Linda finally triumphed, probably by sheer willpower, with a 4-6, 6-4 and 11-9 score.

After a good rest, Isabel and Sandy had to once again get on court to compete in the Mixed Doubles.

Isabel partnered with Ernst and they took on Sandy and Sias.

This match was another quick two-setter, with Sandy and Sias beating Isabel and Ernst 6-2 and 6-2.

After the completion of all the matches and the prize giving, some members continued playing a few friendly games.

Michelle, club secretary, says the players and spectators enjoyed a pleasant evening with a braai.

The next tennis event is the Winter league, which starts in May.

These clubs will compete in the top division, Premier league division A.

“Our second mixed team won their division last year in the premier league Division B, while the first team was runner up in the Premier league Division A,” says Michelle.
