Fun and action at bowling fun day

It was a team effort for 22 teams from all over Ekurhuleni to play bowls at Springs Town Bowling Club during a fundraising event on Monday.

Bowlers from Kleinfontein, Benoni Country Club, Brakpan Mines, Johannesburg, Edenvale, Modderfontein, Heidelberg, Avion Park and Springs Old Boys enjoyed the fundraising event.

Even the u-19 and u-25 players from the Ekurhuleni District teams joined the more experienced bowlers on the greens.

The aim of the event was to raise funds for John Molupe, who is going to play in the Inter-districts Men’s B-Side bowls in Port Elizabeth in April.

The 88 players were divided into 22 teams of four each who played in mixed doubles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles matches.

Shortly before lunch time, a bottle of champagne was placed in the one corner of the Johnny Lotter green and bowlers tried to play, corner to corner, to get their ball closest to the bottle to win it.

Okkie Nel from Springs Town Bowling Club showed the rest of the bowlers what corner to corner bowling is about when his ball stopped closest to the champagne bottle.

After lunch the morning’s winning teams competed against each other.

The team from Brakpan Mines claimed the victory while the team from Kleinfontein Bowling Club won the second prize.

John is humble that so many people care and came to support him so that his dream of going to Port Elizabeth can be fulfilled.

“I appreciate it very much and will do my best during the tournament,” he says.

The club secretary, Izak Hattingh, says both teams handed their prize money over to John..

“We are grateful for the support from all the clubs who attended this event,” he adds.
