Koos gets bronze

Koos Nienaber (20), a boxer from Bert Collins Boxing Club, competed in the Gauteng Elite Boxing Championships in Pretoria on Friday and Saturday.

He received a bronze medal with a 2-3 decision loss in the 56kg category.

His coach Freddie Dicks accompanied him.

Freddie says Koos was mentally and physically prepared for the fight.

“Taking into consideration that this is his first championship he did surprisingly well.

“I am sure he is going to win the Gauteng Championships next year,” says Freddie.

Ex-Hoërskool Hugenote pupil Koos has been interested in the sport since his primary school days, but only joined the club in 2008.

Fighting in this tournament in the 56kg division was a major achievement for him.

“My aim is to box at the SA Championships and to compete at national level,” says Koos.

When the Addie visited the club last Thursday, boxers from different clubs graduated.

Jeanette Dyzel, club chairman, says the graduation is for first-time boxers who have never competed in any tournament.

This event will enable them to compete in their first tournament on April 19 at Klipfontein in Kempton Park.

The coaches commission were present to monitor the graduation.

An ex-Bert Collins boxer, Gerhard Thysse, currently studying in Pretoria, won his fight in the 81kg category and received a gold medal.

The club hosts a tournament on April 9 when different clubs from Ekurhuleni will compete.
