Catching big fish

It was a proud moment for Springs residents Leon Dunn and (50) and Regie Bezuidenhout (37) when they recently posed for the cover of a national angling magazine.

It took the duo two years before their species angling dream came true.

They do species type angling, where they catch carps, weigh them and release the fish back into the dam.

They studied species angling before Regie was ready to improve his personal best of 5,5kg while Leon’s personal best was 4,5kg.

After thorough consideration they decided to take along seven fishing rods to their angling expedition at Donaldson Dam at the end of January.

With a big challenge lying ahead and being traditional ‘pap gooiers’, they had to make the best of what they had and try to improve on their personal best.

“It was an adventure of a lifetime,” says Leon.

They both increased their personal best weight by far more than what they anticipated.

Leon caught a carp that weighed 13,6kg while Regie’s carp weighed 12kg.

“We have never experienced anything like this before,” says Leon.

They agree that it was a wonderful experience and every angler’s dream and that they are more than willing to share what they have learnt and their bait so that every reader will experience his or her own adventure.

Leon says the bait that worked for them was tiger nuts, wafters and ‘boilies’ with flavours of chop chop, double chocolate and midnight and, of course, PVA bags.

They spend a lot of time fishing and take their families with when the opportunity arises.

Regie and Leon are very proud to have been featured on the cover of a magazine after their first species angling session.
