Springswood needs more bowlers

The Springswood Bowling Club committee is looking for new members to join them.

Carol Zeeman, club secretary, says the club is active again and would like interested bowlers to contact it that they can start competing in bowls again.

Currently the club has 20 members, not nearly enough to compete in league games.

The 12 men and eight women get together on a Tuesday between 9am and 12-noon, where they enjoy a few social games of bowls.

World-class Springbok bowler Doug Watson started his bowling career at Springwood BC.

He won the SA Men’s Singles in 1975, the SA Men’s Doubles with bowling partner D Jones in 1971 and the SA Men’s Foiurs in 1970 with his brother Neville Watson and bowling partners, D Jones, W McIntosh and W Leslie.

The club is the oldest in Springs.

About three years ago, the committee sold one of its greens – the Frank Ludwig – greens to Life Parkland Hospital where the new doctors consulting rooms were built.

The greens it currently plays on was named the Dudley Taylor green.

Carol says the hall is also available to rent for functions. Any interested party can call her on 082 256 1127.
